MOVING ON

Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, England

I was asked recently if I had to move from where I live in Nottingham to another place where would I go. My friend asked to name one place in England and another place abroad.

Reluctant as I am to leave Nottingham, the home of Robin Hood, I thought hard about his question. Initially I answered Leeds so that I could regularly go and see the home games of the mighty Leeds United. But soon realising that I am unlikely to get into the Elland Road ground because it is out for every home game, I decided to choose Bristol as a place I would like to live.

Bristol is a large, historic, vibrant city in the south-west of England; it prospered, like many other ports, because of the slave trade. Above is a photo of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, an iconic bridge designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

If you had to live in another place in your country, where would you move to?
If you had to live in another country, where would you move to?

Thinking about other countries where I would like to live, I kept thinking of countries I would not like to live in. The list was long: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Belarus, China, Myanmar, North Korea, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and United Arab Emirates - living in Dubai for me, would be a living hell!

Of the countries that I could live in, the following came to mind: Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and the USA - it would have to be New York or San Francisco if I moved to America.

But, after quite a lot of thinking, I chose Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is pleasure city; along with Barcelona and New York, it is one of my favourite cities in the world. Below is a photo of Damrak, the red light district of Amsterdam. It is not a seedy area; there are bars, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, shops, churches and museums, as well as women advertising their services in the red-lit windows of the merchant houses.

Given climate change and rising sea levels, maybe moving to Amsterdam isn’t such a good idea. The city is below sea level; the sea is kept in check by an elaborate system of dykes and canals.

I am thinking I will move back to the farm land I grew up on, taking it easy. Not a typical overseas location, but back to my beach apartment in Perto Rico

I like thinking about possibilities and 'what ifs', they're interesting.
If I HAD to move to another town in another country, it would mean that Montreal had been hit with a nuclear bomb and Canada 🍁, was no longer inhabitable.
Yep... I guess I'd head to the ATM and pull out some cash before packing a suitcase. 😶❗❗

I hope one day you get to move to your dream place. Amsterdam is a nice place I hear with lots of sexy fun there too..

If you had to live in another place in your country, where would you move to? I have always wanted to move to Oregon as it's beautiful, cooler temperatures, and it's just
some place we have always wanted to live.

If you had to live in another country, where would you move to? I would never move out of the US as I don't fly, and well the US is my home.

I hope you enjoy a great Hump Day my friend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

I like Texas. But I would love to travel to see that bridge. Impressive.

Have a great day! 💋

Great thought exercise!

I'm increasingly feeling like I'm pretty well positioned for climate change living in Minnesota, and it's hard to imagine starting over somewhere else with no friends nearby. If I HAD to move? Maybe Portland, Oregon - it's liberal and it's a fairly short drive to visit either the ocean or the mountains.

In terms of other countries, I enjoyed Spain and Portugal when I visited them a few years ago. Barcelona maybe? Lisbon? We visited a little seaside town just outside of Lisbon called Cascais that I really liked. However, I peeked in a real estate office window and it's not cheap there. Sigh.

In UK I'm very happy to stay put in London, 'tho I also have a long(ish) term dream of buying a 9th C Castle near Carcassonne to develop into an eco-resort in Cathar country with so much history about their stand against the Catholic Church, (more history on request), Mark

In the US, I would move to northern Arkansas on the shores of the White River. If that was unavailable I would live in some mountain area.
In another country ... I would love a mild temperature area, maybe where the mountains meet the ocean. Maybe a quiet island.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society made the island of Guernsey look very attractive. Not sure how realistic that may be.

I'd like to live up in Scotland, around East Lothian. My uncle used to live near Dunbar on the coast.

Once covid has eased - a big if - you need to go on a European tour.

I spent a few hours in Montreal airport en route to Quebec City. I was slightly surprised that I did not have to speak more French there.

Inverness sounds cold. I could move to Ireland too.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the Severn river separating England and Wales, unfortunately, is also a magnet for people wanting to jump off to kill themselves!

I've been told that Portland is a cool city to visit.

I lived in London for about ten years. I couldn't afford to go back there to live now!
Carcassonne is a beautiful city.

I've not been to Guernsey; I've been to Jersey, its neighbouting island. It's quite expensive to live in the Channel Islands though they have low taxes.

Scotland would be okay to live. I wouldn't live in Glasgow because I wouldn't be able to understand the Glaswegian accent.
I'd move to Montrose; they were my favourite Subbuteo team!
