On today's episode of 'What the Fuck Wednesday'....

I didn't sleep very well last night....

So by the time I got work I was already cranky and feeling tired. The last thing I wanted see standing outside my office was a line of people waiting for get work "help" them with their various shitty needs.

Ugh....

Let's top that with an orientation, an employee suffering from a panic attack, and another employee who was having suicidal ideation and I was ready to leave this day on the cutting room floor.

Good God....

I've never had someone come to me to tell me they were feeling suicidal so I was completely unprepared.

What do you do? What do you say??

I called for help immediately, thankfully Dan the Man was able to break away and take over. He'd experienced this before at a previous job so he kind of knew what to do.

I did manage to have a bright spot to my day today, though.....

Not only did my Oldest call me, but I also got a call from my Mighty Marine as well.

This Mom's heart is bursting with pride.

Happy Wednesday!

I hope Dan the Man managed to persuade the employee to seek help and point him/her in the right direction.
You certainly needed that bright spark in your day.
I felt so much better after having talked with my boys.... There is therapeutic quality to family, I swear.

You did the right thing thankfully you had Dan who could help. That's when it's great to have a crisis intervention team available. Unless you work in a hospital I doubt you have one, but this is a good excuse to get training for management. The only other thing you could have done is to call 911. It's no wonder you slept poorly. But at least you ended your day on a good note by getting phone calls from your kids. I hope you have a better day today!! John
Yes, thankfully I had Dan! When I'd thought about it after-the-fact, I remembered a poster we have that has the phone numbers for a suicide prevention hotline and a help resource number for employees who may be experiencing situational depression or anxiety. I'll definitely keep that in mind if I ever experience that again.

Let me tell you, today was not any better. Another day of weird revelations and extended shit shows..... My day actually started with an employee coming to me to see if we had a legal source that could help her, her ex husband was taking her to court to take her daughter away. Yah, that was a fun conversation.

I've dealt with students contemplating suicide. I talked to them, advised them to talk to family and friends and urged them to get professional help. I also arranged regular tutorials to check their welfare.
It's definitely a sobering experience. This employee ended up calling the store today to let me know she was in a better head-space and thanked me for listening. I'm not sure what I did, if anything, but I'm glad she was feeling better.

Nothing like being blindsided with something like someone needing suicide intervention. At least she was seeking help! I can see where it might be more comfortable saying something at work as opposed to some random person on the other end of a phone. I know they're trained to help, but it's still rather impersonal. And huge amount of kudos to you for being open and honest with her about not knowing what to do. No one in that mindset needs someone bullshitting them.
Thank goodness your babies (lol) were there to call you and give you some much needed support with their phone calls!

Damn. That's a tough spot for sure. On one hand, it's great that person vocalized their suicidal thoughts but its also a odd place to do so instead of a hotline or finding a therapist. I'm glad Dan was able to step in.

I agree.... Definitely an odd place. Part of me wondered if perhaps she was trying to get out of working without having it affect her attendance. We had to have a family member come pick her up so she could seek medical attention and the only thing the family member kept saying was 'Is this going to affect her attendance? Is she going to lose her job?'

The answer is no, of course. Especially since COVID, the company I work for has a robust mental health resource base for us employees and there are BCBS counseling resources free to us at any time, day or night.

I didn't know what to do, but I was completely honest with her. I told her I had never been in a situation like that before and I was uprepared, but I was very concerned for her and the last thing I wanted was for harm to come to her and I was going to reach out to get help.
