The Scent of Time Chapter 4

The Scent of Time
Chapter 4

Is there really anything that is a coincidence?
Circumstances and experiences unite to create these moments when we ask that question.
Perhaps there is much more to it than we might know.
It was meant to be is another familiar expression.
These occurrences are given added meaning and weight by the feelings generated when we believe something invisible has taken place, that perhaps, in some way there is more to the story.

We stood there for a few moments. It was not an awkward feeling as we looked into each others eyes.
She smiled playfully and turned to gather her things together, her purse, a shall and the book she had been reading.
I lead the way toward the new seating arrangement. I could feel her eyes on me and something else that defied description. It felt so familiar yet far away at the same time.
When we reached our destination, I paused to let her select where to sit so she would be most comfortable. She observed her choices.
Situated in a small area which offered seclusion due to all the bookshelves surrounding it, there were two comfortable looking upholstered arm chairs next to each other and a small space between them. In front of them was a low coffee table and on the other side was a sofa which was smaller in size but appeared to be very comfortable. It had the appearance of having been a very welcoming friend which offered rest and contemplation to many readers over time.
The daylight outside the window which was centered in the arrangement, had all but faded. There was a warmth to the color due of the setting sun behind the clouds and heavily falling snow, mixed with the reflected lights from the street lamps and light from windows inside buildings which lined the cobblestone street.
It all combined to add to the feeling of intimacy, seclusion and connection we were both experiencing.
She decided to sit on the sofa. she immediately shed the weight and apparent discomfort of her high heeled shoes and let them rest off to one side as she brought her legs up on to the cushion.
I paused and looked at my options. I wanted to sit next to her but I felt that might make her feel leas comfortable.
She seemed to be observing me, curious about what I would do next.
I chose to sit in one of the arm chairs directly across from her. It was still very close and so it did not feel like a distance that can some times add to the feeling of separation.
I set my satchel on the table next to her book. I had not noticed it before because my focus was on her and her alone but as I did, I recognized the cover.
She spoke first, Well this is really nice. The only thing missing is a glass of wine and candles. she said smiling.
I paused for a moment, Well I am unable to offer you a nice Pinot Noir but I do have this. I reached into my satchel and pulled out a flask.
She said, Are you always this prepared?
I set the flask between us on the table,I replied playfully, Yes I am an Eagle Scout and that is the first thing I was taught, You never know when you might encounter a beautiful woman in a bookstore.
She laughed and said, Well, there is a snowstorm outside and we would not want to catch our death of cold. What kind of medicine is in there?
I have found that under these circumstances a single malt scotch from the Highlands should do the trick., I said as I twisted the cap open. Unfortunately I am forced to be somewhat barbaric and cannot offer you a glass.
She responded in a voice imitating May West, I like my liquor like I like my men, straight up.
That made me want to laugh out loud but I restrained it into a less boisterous presentation.
So I responded in the best imitation of WC Fields I could muster, I spent half my money on gambling, alcohol, and wild women, the other half I wasted.
She laughed and took the flask from my hand, I will drink to that., she said.
She took a swig playfully in a slightly exaggerated manner befitting her comment.
Then in a very sexy voice she said, Mmmm thats what momma needed. and she rested the flask in front of me.
I was enthralled by her in every way, I lifted the flask, I looked at her and said, Normally if I were sharing my flask, I might wipe the top before taking a drink but I think in this case I would rather imagine how it felt when your lips touched it.
As she watched me, I slowly brought it to my lips, closing my eyes I took a drink.
