Whatcha reading?

2021 is certainly a year of hope [the vaccine]; of change [a new administration]; and of resolves. I am purposing this year read more after a year of spending way too much time in front of a little screen.

I am going back to the analog style, with pages and cover in hand. In fact, I am reading three books simultaneously. Here’s a quick at what I find interesting and why:

Men In Love: Men’s Sexual Fantasies: The Triumph of Love over Rage by Nancy Friday.
I picked this book up at a thrift store one day. Written in 1980, the author had already written several books on women’s sexuality, most famously My Mother/Myself.
This volume looks at hundreds if not thousands of responses from men, sharing sometimes for the first time in written form, their deepest, darkest secret fantasies. The author takes from a sometimes dated psychological perspective on sex, and sexual tendencies. Each chapter explores a different category from masturbation to BDSM and so much more! I thoroughly enjoy reading the fantasies from men; but not so much her attempts at Freudian explanations of their desires.
The Ethical Slut by Janet W. Hardy & Dossie Easton.
This book was given to me by someone I met from this site is new the lifestyle like me. is the third edition in 20 years of this “primer” the polyamorous lifestyle. This book dovetails beautifully with Men In Love, because it modernizes the psychological aspect of the above mentioned book into a matter of personal choice and exploration. The updated version also focuses on the newer generation’s perspectives on sex and sexuality that I find refreshing as it expands my own.
Bag Man by Rachel Maddow.
I was a young high schooler when Nixon was in office. I remember when Agnew resigned as Vice President, when the Watergate scandal broke and Nixon’s eventual resignation. I lived through it, but didn’t understand or follow it.
Reading the story in detail and the comparison to the times we are in now just reminds me that is “nothing new under the sun”. I also like Maddow’s style, ’s easy read and looks historically at both sides of the political spectrum during a tumultuous time much like where we find ourselves in now.

So, what about you? Whatcha reading? Digital or Analog?

Good list. Men fall in love with the women they are the most attracted to, and women are generally attracted to the men they are in love with. There have been many different theses around this notion covering different related facets but the fundamentals hold true.

thanks Aston for the read. Just read in The Ethical Slut that familiar quote: "Men agree to a relationship to have sex. Women agree to sex to have a relationship." And I have to admit in my single days, I was like that...sex for relationship. It is kind of nice to look at the playfulness of sex nowadays. And polyamory as a way to augment an existing relationship. so far, so good!

The Poly lifestyle is an interesting one. I see it as a multitude of phases people go through in life, but the sustainability of it over the long term is doubtful at best. Many communes that started over the last few decades without fail thrived for a few years but ended up dissipating. It's an interesting one...The Ethical slut.
On geopolitics....well it's history all over again. No civilization in history ever had a peaceful great reset.
These tumultuous times only mean history is repeating itself. The only consistency which is us humans never learn from history.

I am reading in the real deal format...a book....a handheld item..lol.

1. The Hate you Give....it was also a movie, which was suggested to me by a student. I choose to read the book. It chronicles the life of a teen who attempts to navigate 2 worlds...the world in which she lives and the world in which she attends an upper crust prep school.

2. The Vanishing Half....twin sisters African American and one vanishes into the world of Caucasians as they are both very fair skinned . She in essences ' passes ' for white and her husband knows nothing of her ethnic identity. The twins have daughters and the tale is woven when these cousins cross paths.

3. Good Mourning.... By the Psychic medium Teresa Caputo...Moving through everyday losses with wisdom from the other side.

These are on my shelf to read. I too...have vowed to get off this screen and into the books going forward.

i love your selection and rachel maddow is always en pointe~~

For Christmas my son bought me a few more of the original Ian Fleming James Bond 007 books. It's interesting to see how they compare to the movies.

Nice to hear from you again - I was starting to wonder where you were.

thanks Cleave! I have the boxed set of 007 in paperback. We've been binge watching 007 in honor of Sean Connery's passing. Good to see you Cobalt Cutie!

I'm reading James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series (I'm on 17 out of 21). They're fairly quick reading, amusing and keep me interested. After those, I'll probably get some new Stephen Kings.
I went digital almost 10 years ago to save space (I currently have about 305 books) and my books keep in much better condition on a Kindle. Pulling a book in and out of a shoulder bag is very hard on the spines.

Women's Murder Club...I'll have to look that up. I haven't read much fiction of late, but I love Ludlum's books. And don't judge, but I've never read Stephen King! I know, right?!

I prefer the feel of paper and I'm reading a rather large book about the band; King Crimson. I like reading autobiographies rather than novels.

A Promised Land by President Barack Obama. A refreshing escape from our current horror show and a restorative tonic that reminds us of the greatness of which America is capable. As is my wont, I read books in hardcover, although I have transitioned magazines and newspapers to digital format.

While I am sure Men In Love makes for titillating reading, please bear in mind that there is a gaping chasm between men's fantasies and their banal realities. Of course, it's possible that the reason men only have sex once a week is that they need this time to recover from gymnastics and pyrotechnics that ensued during their last sexy-time!

bustinout20202 replies on 1/15/2021 8:03 pm:
Pyrotechnics??! Really?? Serious hot stuff there! lol!
I do find the book a very fun read...oh what goes on in the minds of men?!

Any words from President Obama would be a nice respite from today. I'd like to catch Michelle's book too. Good to hear from you, Alaska Man!

I read The Ethical Slut based on a recommendation. We would discuss each chapter after I read them. It validated many of my thoughts and opened my eyes to others.
I read a lot of crime-based fiction but hate e-readers. Now reading The Partner by John Grisham.

I think a book club for The Ethical Slut is a great idea! I have just cracked the cover, but I have liked what I've read so far.
I do like the feel of a book over an e-reader. There's a sense of accomplishment when one finishes and closes the back cover that you don't get with an e-book.
Thanks for the read!

Have been a huge fan of the band King Crimson since 1980s Line-up. Adrian Belew is one of best songwriters with Guitar Wizardry. That KC big band sucks English rabbit eggs. The Live at Mexico City 1984?? is exactly same show seen Blossom Music Center. Also saw Bruford's Earthworks band at Finney Chapel Oberlin College before the KC concert.

I have most of the albums on vinyl/cd. My favourite KC album is 'Red'
