A Day in my Life

A Day in my Life (For glitch free version see first comment. ) Wake early. Go back sleep. Get , wash, make tea see if there is any work do. There isn't. Make more tea. Open door go out and drink tea in garden before it gets too hot to go out. Flies rush in. Flies buzz round trying to find their way out again. Spend morning killing flies. Sometimes, compassionately, open window, folded magazine in hand and say "out or death." They want to go out but can't find the way. More flies come in. Fly gets caught by spider on the window sill. Ghastly. Have lunch. check MenNation.com to see if I have any new comments. I haven't. Spend afternoon clearing mess left by dead flies and spiders and wiping away cobwebs. Have a cup of tea and watch spider re-building it's web. (I have pause here. The two flies that prompted start writing this blog are currently flying back and forwards IN BETWEEN AND THE SCREEN, buzzing loudly. They have five minutes live.) Brave the heat and go for evening walk by river. Lovely. return, check doorway for flies before opening. One tries rush , but I repel it and shut the door. Eat, sleep repeat. |

Well that is one way to pass the day,you must have a strong bladder to drink all that tea,is it builders tea? As for the flies,do you not have a swatter or an insect door screen to keep the blighters out

You only need a strong bladder (not that mine isn't,) if you plan to hold it in all day, which fortunately I don't need to do - my house does have modern sanitary facilities.

Here’s a comment for you! I have a housefly that’s been buzzing around intermittently and I’m too lazy to get up and chase it. Keep hoping it’ll die a natural death but it’s been a week now...

Although I find flies quite annoying (as most of us probably do) I think I could tolerate them if it meant sharing some Earl Grey in the garden each morning and enjoying a lovely walk by the river every evening. As for the flies . . . I've always wanted to try a Venus Fly Trap. I might just look into that, though I'm not sure how well it would survive our cold winters. “As with the butterfly, adversity is necessary to build character in people.” ~ JB Wirthlin

Although I find flies quite annoying (as most of us probably do) I think I could tolerate them if it meant sharing some Earl Grey in the garden each morning and enjoying a lovely walk by the river every evening. As for the flies . . . I've always wanted to try a Venus Fly Trap. I might just look into that, though I'm not sure how well it would survive our cold winters. This morning I managed to stop any getting in. Peace at last!

I'm in Austin, Texas visiting and the flies here are terrible. They mostly are outside and in the kitchen. I pay the kids a quarter a fly to swat them. When you get up, you look to see if there's any work to do - what kind of work? Elevate me...

I have screens on all my windows and doors, but sometimes they still get in. I was supposed to have started a new job (finally) then lock down started. 4 weeks so far. Living on my own I was starting to go stir crazy, so I made a plan... do some tasks each day I've been putting off, then make myself a coffee (don't like tea) and sandwich then off to the local park for a picnic in my car. It's warmer in my car than at home with it being Winter here if you can call it Winter. If it's not windy next week, I'll have a walk around the oval. Getting out of the house has helped my state of mine. No end in sight of the lock down being lifted. Didn't help that 3,500 idiots rioted in the city yesterday, no masks of cause.

I never kill flies these days, I've even taken to growing certain plants in my garden to encourage certain types of fly. And I actually like spiders (sad but true), I find webs fascinating. Must appeal to my OCD!!  Anyways, I hope you're well and seeing some sort of sensible restoration of normality.

Yes! I would be delighted to imagine you standing at your door just like me and saying "out or death!" I have to admit, this was not really an average day, lol, but it alleviated the fly-induced irritation a bit to write it.

Ah well, yes. Don't get me started on the decline of the ephemerids in my local chalk rivers. When I was a boy etc etc. Hopefully there will be enough in the Scottish lochs I am visiting in a few weeks to bring up a few late season trout to see my Blae and Black or Sooty Olive. Maybe a sea trout or two - I am stocking up on my favourite Mallard and Claret Bumbles. Perhaps a Kate McLaren this time? But really, it is true, insects are in trouble, and of course we all know why: habitat, weedkiller pesticides etc. I don't use chemicals in the garden and have a wild grass patch and loads of native flowers so I am doing my bit. After all I only kill a few house flies with a newspaper! I've just had some of the best wild trout fishing of my life......I must tell you about it some time.

I do really well with a Kate McLaren, the bushier the better in a decent wave. I also love a pearly invicta at this time of year. The claret bumble is another favourite too. And I always go to a sedgehog if I'm far north. Blue zulus and bibios do well for me, on the bob in a decent wave. And I like a daddy if it's into September. Where are you off to? I've stopped chasing the sea trout, too endangered for me. I've just had some of the best wild trout fishing of my life......I must tell you about it some time.

Call me paranoid, but I'm not going to give my exact destination on open blog. How can I give you a clue? I can't really. It's a long way west though. Where they are maybe not quite so endangered. And I won't be killing any. I think I know where you're going, I've fished there a few times but never late-ish season, will be interested to know how you get on.
