Excess deaths from Covid 19
Excess deaths from Covid 19 The official coronavirus death toll has passed 200,000, but an accounting of lives that were lost in the United States since mid-March shows that the pandemic and its resulting disruption have caused substantially more deaths: at least 266,000 more people have died than would in a normal year, according a New York Times analysis of estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our analysis examines deaths from causes — not just confirmed cases of coronavirus — beginning when the virus took hold. That allows comparisons that don’t depend on the availability of coronavirus tests in a given place or on the accuracy of cause-of-death reporting. What it shows is that some places have seen staggering death tolls, while nearly every state has seen death counts that are substantially higher than usual. The only states where death patterns look normal are Alaska and Hawaii. New York City 27,0 excess deaths March – Sept. 5 California 22,800 excess deaths March – Sept. 5 Texas 23,900 excess deaths March – Sept. 5 Florida 20,0 excess deaths March – Sept. 5 New Jersey 18,200 excess deaths March – Sept. 5 But comparing recent totals of deaths from causes can provide a more complete picture of the pandemic’s impact than tracking only deaths of people with confirmed diagnoses. Epidemiologists refer fatalities in the gap between the observed and normal numbers of deaths as “excess deaths.” From March through Sept. 5, the most recent date with reliable death statistics, estimated excess deaths were about 42 percent higher than the official coronavirus fatality count. If this pattern holds, it would put the current death toll at about 285,000 people. Many epidemiologists believe measuring excess deaths is the best way to assess the impact of the virus in real time. It shows how the virus is altering normal patterns of mortality. |
